Taming Technology in the Home technology home

Technology enables us to be forces for good in the world, but sometimes it distracts us from being present in our families.

M. Russell Ballard noted, “Handheld devices, such as smartphones, are a blessing, but they can also distract us from hearing the ‘still, small voice’ [of the Spirit]. They need to be our servants, not our masters.”

Heather Johnson, a family and relationship coach and mother of six, offers suggestions for families learning how to get the most out of technology and how to avoid becoming slaves to its distracting nature.

Gospel Solutions for Families is a show focused on offering practical, relevant tips for raising children in faith. You can subscribe to the podcast on MormonChannel.org, the Mormon Channel app, or iTunes.

I loved this video and I wanted to share it with my friends here in Brazil, but not all of them understand English… is there a possibility of translating it to Portuguese? Or could I get permission to download it in the Mormon Channel and translate it myself?

I start my needs with things like food, water, sleep, etc. not nature and movement lol and I get it those are important to but I think their audience is a bunch of middle class people who don't have to worry about stuff like the basics that are more basic than their basics.

I was inspired to delete my social media accounts and stop watching tv everyday and my life has been so much better ever since. I was honestly addicted to it and I spent more time online or over the phone with people than I did in person. My life has been better for it in the end. It was really hard stopping and it's been a long process but now I read books, listen to talks, go outside and enjoy nature, focus on achieving goals with school and serving in the church. I feel like my mind is more well developed than it otherwise would have been and like I will achieve more spiritually, financially, emotionally, socially and physically than I ever would have staying glued to the screen as I'd previously been. My testimony is like night and day. I don't think those things are evil or anything and it's better to be using my time in other areas. Looking back cutting it off was the best thing, for me, that I could have done. I feel that much closer to my purpose in life.

We had instruction come to our stake presidency from the Seventy over us to not use smartphones or tablets for any purpose in sacrament meetings. This made me annoyed because I was using the LDS library app for my scriptures at church, and therefore if I wanted/needed to look up a scripture during sacrament meeting I'd have to also bring along my relatively heavy hard copy set. Through murmuring in my heart, I complied. And now, I can see the wisdom in it.

I really love this. I'm 17 and I know that I use my phone too much, but now that I know the long-term consequences, I am finally motivated to put my phone down. I wish everyone could see this.
